What actually happens in the split second a bowling ball hits the pins?

One heavy ball, ten light pins, and a whole chain reaction of momentum getting handed off in a fraction of a second — slowed down, sped up, and rewound as many times as you want.

A strike looks instant, but there's a whole cascade of physics packed into that half-second. A heavy, fast ball carries a lot of momentum — mass times velocity — and when it slams into the first pin, some of that momentum doesn't disappear, it gets handed off. The pin flies, and it hands some of its own momentum off to the next pin it clips. What looks like chaos is actually just momentum conservation, over and over, in a chain.

The bowling preset sets up exactly that: a rolling ball and a rack of pins, ready to go the second you release it. Because it runs on the same real physics engine as the rest of the sandbox — not a scripted "pins fall down" animation — every hit actually computes the collision, and the pins scatter differently pretty much every time you reset it.

That's the part worth lingering on. Turn on live readouts and watch the momentum number for the ball drop the instant it hits the first pin — and watch the total system momentum stay almost exactly where it started. It's the cleanest possible way to learn momentum by playing instead of taking it on faith from a textbook diagram: the numbers move in front of you, and they add up.

Like every preset here, this one runs across all four Knowledge Levels. At "Curious," the lesson panel just says a heavy fast thing knocks lighter things around. Switch to "Expert" and you get the actual impulse-momentum math for each collision — same rack of pins, same strike, a lot more formula underneath it if that's what you're after.

Change the ball's mass. Make the ball heavier or lighter before you roll it. Does a lighter, faster ball transfer the same momentum as a heavy, slow one?

Aim off-center. Roll the ball at an angle instead of dead center. Watch how the chain of collisions changes completely.

Watch the total, not just the ball. Turn on the system momentum readout before you roll. Watch it barely change even as ten pins go flying in every direction.
