A catapult is really just two physics ideas stacked on top of each other: a lever swinging around a pivot, and a projectile that, once it leaves the arm, doesn't care about the catapult anymore — only gravity and its launch velocity matter. That second part is the whole idea of projectile motion, and it's one of those things that's genuinely more fun to feel than to read about.
In the sandbox, the catapult preset drops you straight into it: a hinged arm, a counterweight, and a payload sitting in the sling. Release it and the arm swings, the payload flies, and — because this is an interactive physics simulation, not a diagram — you get live numbers the whole time. Speed, height, kinetic energy, all updating as the payload rises, peaks, and falls.
That's the difference between reading "a projectile's horizontal and vertical motion are independent" in a textbook and watching it happen: you can pause mid-flight, flip on velocity vectors, and actually see the horizontal arrow stay dead constant while the vertical one shrinks, stops, and reverses. Nobody has to tell you that gravity only pulls straight down once you've watched it do exactly that a dozen times.
It's grade-agnostic on purpose. Set the Knowledge Level to "Curious" and the lesson panel talks about it like you're figuring it out for the first time — because you probably are. Bump it to "Student" or "University" and the same swing gets the vocabulary and the equations to match: launch angle, range formula, the works. Same catapult, same swing, different depth. That's true for every preset in the sandbox, not just this one — four levels, from first-time-curious to full derivations, live under the hood.
Try this
Change the angle. Rebuild the arm at a steeper or shallower angle before releasing. Which angle sends the payload furthest? (Hint: it's not the steepest one.)
Turn on the trajectory line. Toggle the aim/trajectory overlay before you release. Watch the predicted arc match — or not quite match — what actually happens.
Swap the payload. Try a heavier vs. lighter body in the sling. Does mass change how far it flies? Watch the live kinetic energy number as you find out.
